Our Therapy Dog Needs Supplies For The 2018-2019 School Year!

Help me give my students some treats, toys, and dog food that they can feed to our therapy dog, Wally! Our kids are in charge of walking, training and feeding our therapy dog, so we need supplies!

My Students

I work in a District 75 special needs public school in Brooklyn, serving middle school students. All of our students have special needs, ranging from diagnoses of autism, intellectual disabilities, and severe emotional needs that make learning in a typical classroom difficult. Three quarters of our student population come from low-income households and most qualify for free school lunch. Our student population is very mixed, and within a diagnosis so are their abilities and needs. Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and the extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.

My Project

Last summer I adopted our school's new therapy dog, Wally! She's a Chiweenie (Dachshund/Chihuahua mix) through the Comfort Dog pilot. She comes to school everyday as a therapy dog for my special needs students. This is Wally's second year, and it is such a wonderful program! We need supplies for her at school!

Wally helps facilitate opportunities for our students to develop awareness and an understanding of emotions, kindness, empathy, and an ability to communicate their feelings.

Wally has been such a source of joy in our school. She loves coming to school every day, and foremost, she LOVES our students. Her favorite thing to do is greet every student, as well as give the students kisses! To say that the students truly have taken well to her is an understatement. They help take care of her by feeding and walking her every day, and feel very proud when they complete their "very important job" since they feel they are being relied upon. Upon being a good listener and completing their work, they earn play time with Wally at the end of each session, which has been beyond motivating for our students. They are also learning to be good leaders by helping Wally learn new tricks and follow commands.

Wally has been greatly changing the culture of this school. The students come into school so excited to see her, and they constantly ask me where she is (if we are not together), and if I do not bring her to school they show great concern for her well-being - she is the buzz of the school! Our students are talking so much more, and are better able to express their feelings in my therapy room. If the student feels upset or sick, they know they can count on Wally!
