My Students

I teach an upper school literature course to 11th and 12th graders in a NYC alternative school. The students are studying African American Literature through the lenses of the American dream, ancestry, and justice. This course will culminate in a performance based assessment task that students will add to their graduation portfolios.

Our goal is to develop life long readers and complex thinkers.

We are excited to read contemporary texts by African American authors, conversations about which students can have both in and out of the classroom.

My Project

Thank you for considering helping us buy a class set of the novel Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, along with two audio copies. This year, our upper school students are studying the African American experience through literature. They're examining the themes of justice, the American Dream and ancestry. Their analysis of the novel Homegoing will become part of their graduation portfolios.

Homegoing is a perfect text for this purpose -- it's contemporary, widely read, gives them access to an inspiring and illuminating story, and helps them examine the themes of the course.

It's a challenging text that will help them be college-ready and to consider important questions about history and race.
