My goal with this was to engage with teens where they're at -- and many of them are showing an interest in analog or non-streaming media. They're collecting vinyl, CDs, DVDs, writing letters, and making things. It's great to see!\r\n\r\nMy library has a media center full of items that haven't been used for many years, including a huge collection of DVDs. Students come into the library at lunch and often want to stream short form media on devices connected to the internet. I'd like to see them work on their attention spans, engage with storytelling and art, and get off the internet, where their tastes are controlled by algorithms. Thus, this project to re-integrate DVDs into the library collection was born.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the school year, I still had my interns working on cataloging all of the movies so that students can check them out. They remarked frequently about how cool the collection is and the on-trend nature of this project. What's old is new again! I hope to have the full collection launched at the start of the school year in September.\r\n\r\nI wish I could show you photos of them watching movies, but this is the pace of school life and it's important to me that the kids themselves are involved in the project. As they work, they document their progress, reflect on challenges, and make informed design decisions — just like professional engineers.
