My Project

My students are from all over the world-Somalia, Rwanda Guatemala, Venezuela, Nepali, Syria, Iraq, Tanzania, Congo, and Uganda to name a few. I have over 10 languages spoken in my classroom. As an ESL teacher, I want to provide my students with books that represent the array of personalities and cultures that are in my classroom. When students don't feel connected, they won't learn and achieve as much as they should. These books will give my students a chance to see themselves portrayed in books in their languages and will help build a safe and diverse community. Reading is proven to increase comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Reading for pleasure improves students’ abilities in other content areas like social studies, science, and math.

My students need diverse books in their native languages to reflect their unique and different cultural experiences.

Culturally relevant books connect to students' lives, not just to their cultural heritage. Having rich, authentic books that my students would like and relate to will help them foster a love for reading! I want my students to complete innovative projects on the books they chose such as book talks, Bloom Balls, book ads, and more.
