Our Stories Are Touching!

Help me give my students the opportunity to share their school lives with their families at home through scrapbooking. Since many of our students are residential, they do not get to share their daily lives with their families.

My Students

We are a K-12 residential school for students with sensory impairments. All of our students are sensory impaired and many of them have an additional disability. We have students living on and off-campus. Our residential students come from all over our state and live on our campus Sunday through Friday. Our school is considered a high poverty school.

The majority of our students read below grade level and need engaging opportunities to practice their reading and writing skills.

Our students enjoy school and communicating with their peers in sign language. Our hearing impaired students communicate in American Sign Language, and our visually impaired students read and write in braille.

My Project

Our residential students live on campus Sunday through Friday; therefore, they do not get to share their daily lives with their families. If each student received a scrapbook, they could create pages detailing the many events they experience at school (i.e. academic classes, dormitory life, athletic events, field trips, etc.).

Many of our families do not sign and the scrapbooks would provide an interactive way for our students to communicate special events with their parents.

Also, our students need motivating opportunities to practice their writing skills. Students would be motivated to write about their experiences; therefore, they would be learning new vocabulary and practicing their writing skills.
