I have been working with students with special needs for several years, and I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. I have watched reluctant learners blossom to become engaged students, seen the excitement in their faces when they have mastered a new skill, and celebrated every success with them along the way. There is no greater joy than to see students who once thought they could not realize that they absolutely can.
When asked what is the best part of teaching my students, my response is always this: THEY NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME!
Every day, they surpass the high expectations I set for them. They persevere despite the adversity they face; give 100% effort daily in their education; and make my career as an educator the most rewarding one I could have.
My Project
As we continue to learn more about our students and their sensory needs, we find that we are still searching for more ways to meet the variety of needs they have.
Apart from the visual, auditory, and olfactory senses that we would typically consider when attempting to meet student needs, we are continually finding that our students need more!
We requested the crash pad, sensory toys, and bubble tube to meet a wide range of needs with some big items.
Their bodies need tactile (touch) and position/movement stimulation on occasion, which can lead to some more difficult behaviors if these needs are not met. Our goal is to continue to find ways to meet these needs in productive and safe ways.
