Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My library is in a middle school with a population of primarily Spanish native speakers. Over 60% of our students speak Spanish at home, and many students have recently emigrated to San Francisco from countries in Central America. We also have a Spanish Immersion program that supports students learning Spanish as a second language as well as native speakers while also teaching middle school content.

My students are always looking for books that they can read in Spanish that are engaging.

It can be exhausting to have so much of their day in English, and they want to relax with books in Spanish that are entertaining for them. When they practice reading in Spanish, it also helps their literacy skills translate into English. We have four twenty minute school wide reading block where they an practice their reading skills and build reading as a lifelong hobby.
