I was so proud of three of my students (Oceanna, Kamyla, and Haley) for stepping up and recognizing the need to restart the recycling program at our school. They came to me after my Earth Day lesson last year and wanted to start a recycling movement.
These girls are not only good students but are also passionate about how important recycling is to our environment and are dedicated to improving our school. They already are leaders within their class and can easily become leaders within the school.
Oceanna, Kamyla, and Haley will be responsible for teaching their peers to treat the recycle bins as recycle bins and not use them as another trash can. They will create posters and a presentation to explain the recycling movement. They will also organize a team of peers to maintain the recycling bins as needed. They will improve upon their communication and presentation skills while demonstrating the determination towards maintaining and growing a student led recycling program.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is to lead the way to make our school a clean, efficient place that will help the environment little by little. We will help teach and inform our peers about the effect our waste has on our planet and what we can do in our school to reduce the waste.
Since we attend a project based school, we are use to doing research projects. We see this as a leadership project, as we will be leading the way to establishing and sustaining a recycling program. We will accomplish our goal through school wide trainings, after school activities, and a poster campaign with the recycling bins.
We decided to help our school and allow easier accessibility to recycling to save the planet little by little each day. The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it. We want to do our part of being part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.
