Our Post-Puritan Morality: Shaping Young Adult Minds

My Students

My eleventh grade students are being introduced to the wonders of the adult world: driver's licenses, paychecks, and a sense of freedom. While many of my students celebrate these milestones, I find it important to help them build responsibility and accountability for their thoughts, actions, and conversations. By educating them with meaningful texts, I hope to develop those skills needed in adulthood.

My students are from a small town, rural community, so they often jump at the chance to learn about new cultures and different time periods.

Any text that can expand their horizons helps cultivate a sense of empathy and understanding in students. That is why I teach here.

My Project

The lessons of the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism, and this year's presidential election prove cyclical and relevant to contemporary society. The deceit and mistrust of innocent and victimized people shows up in the less educated parishioners in Salem, the famous entertainers of the 1950s, and marginalized cultures in the 21st century. In my unit plan for The Crucible, my students examine how morality influences power within the four acts of the play. Specifically, students analyze how a group of young girls, seemingly innocent in the Puritan town, can overturn an entire village and justify the execution of several people. I think my students are most shocked about how these events actually happened in history and how well Arthur Miller fictionalizes this account.

I am always amazed at how a student "owns" the part by creating different voices and showing the characters' emotions while reading.

Students volunteer (here, read "fight") for these roles to read aloud in class. The reason I need new books of The Crucible, though, is that the class set I currently have dates back to the 1990s, or about four teachers before I started at my school. Many of the spines are missing or badly taped on, and several copies are missing the preface of the book. Some students have to share books, which hinders the process of students emoting while reading and citing evidence for understanding. A new class set would ensure that each student had a sturdy copy of the text, and that all students had the same version of the play.
