This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are so curious to learn about the world, but our nonfiction library is practically empty! We do not have enough books to go around! My students need nonfiction books that will support their love of learning and individual interests.
I teach first grade at a charter school located in a high poverty, high crime neighborhood in New York City.
More than 85% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. I work with some of the most underprivileged students in the country who also happen to be some of the smartest, most thoughtful, and most caring human beings I've ever met. My first graders are curious, motivated, and love learning. While my students' individual academic abilities are very different, one thing is the same - they all want to learn. I am passionate about creating a classroom community where all children have equal opportunities to learn and this means having access to the best learning materials possible.
My Project
I am requesting several sets of nonfiction books. The books will entice my curious students to read! I have selected books about math, science, social studies, animals and feelings, as well as biographies and books with high frequency sight words. All of the books are at a first grade reading level which means students can read the books independently. They can get the targeted practice they need to become better readers and improve their comprehension. Learning new information will never have been so much fun! I want to create engaged, informed, inspired, motivated, challenged, and curious students who always want to learn more and I am positive these books will help.
In this day and age, literacy is the foundation of everything!
My kids need nonfiction books that will feed their brains and foster a desire to learn more about the world around them. I would be heartbroken if their curiosity died because of our empty library. Thank you for reading. Please help if you can.
