Students have been introduced to all our old materials plus the new ones we got from this project. Watching the 1st and 2nd graders with the tinker cube lock boxes is such a joy. They are trying, taking risks, figuring things out. It's so fun to see the lightbulbs go off in their brains when they find the right key that fits or figure out how to turn the little light on.\r\n\r\nThe third graders have really loved the life cycle of animals sets. I set up trays with all the pieces hidden in colorful rice and they dig through to find the pieces and then put them into the correct sequence. They are learning so much! And speaking of learning a lot, you should see our kindergarten kids with the rainbow blocks, just stacking away, balancing, testing, and getting excited by what they build. I am also incorporating literacy into play by challenging them to build letters with the blocks.\r\n\r\nOur first and third grade classes will soon study human body and I am so excited to pull out the organs apron plus the human body soft doll toy. Everything in our play space really gives a hands on aspect to the learning our kiddos are experiencing. Whether they're reading during quiet time, choosing a book to take home, or recommending favorites to classmates, these books have become a valued part of our daily learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students have greater opportunities to become stronger readers and lifelong learners. When I first introduced the ice cream set and the coffee shop set, kids faces were all aglow with excitement. We took turns pretending to be in a coffee shop and ice cream stand so they could practice the vocabulary used in these places. Watching them create their own stories while pretending with these items has been so eye opening. And the laundry set! Forget about it! They have all been overjoyed using pretend area in our play space. Another staff member brought in some old scarves from her grandmother's house and a tin can of buttons. The students have been washing and drying and ironing and tailoring away with these items.\r\nThe vet set is another one that is highly used by our kindergarten and first grade students especially. They take turns being the vet and the pet owner and they're working together on sharing and problem solving.\r\nThe easel is another item that we are still getting accustomed to using. So far we have had students work together on the same picture from different sides of the easel. This has proven to take a lot of teamwork and flexibility as well.\r\nAll of this could have happened without your donation. For the past two months, I have been able to set up and engage the students in multiple messy play and sensory related experiences. It has been a snowy winter where we are and on more than one occasion we have created fake snow. The students help make it with baking soda and shaving cream using the bowls and mixing spoons. Then they play with it with small animals or scoopers. It has been a hit.\r\nI have also used the shaving cream and trays and silicone mats during phonics lessons for the students to trace letters and words in. I used the rice and food coloring to create a whole arctic scene in our sand table. The purple and blue rice to use for play was amazing. We have left that out for over a month now. I have also used the materials during a huge paper maché project with first graders. They were able to dive right into the mess and create paper maché pyramids during their ancient Egypt unit of study.\r\nAll of this and we still have over 4 more months in the school year. I can't wait to see what kinds of messy play experiences I can provide for students this spring! They could choose two books and return them within a week. They loved their brand new books. The series books are so wonderful because students get to know the characters they love so much and start to make self to text connections!\r\n\r\nWell of course they LOVED the graphic novels we were able to get because of you! There is so much more to a graphic novel beside the illustrations. Students learn about text features, and how to write engaging dialogue.\r\n\r\nI have a student from last year, who stops by to borrow the graphic novels. He is always so excited and says \"don't worry I will return it... I know you only have a few!\" \r\n\r\nWe read in small groups around a table together and there is always a comprehension strategy we focus on each day. Our students use play dough on a daily basis for a variety of activities at school. They use it to tap out sounds in phonics, to count in math, to strengthen their fine motor skills, and even as an extra activity after finishing their work. Now, all our K-5 students will have play dough to take home to extend their learning. We will work with their families to help them know what activities can be done and how their learning can be extended with this great tool. I can't wait to hear about the hands-on learning that students are able to do not just at school but at home as well. We had a wonderful parent volunteer pack up all the play dough to send home with our students this week. Your donation had made a huge impact on our school. Students are so excited to play with the new pretend tools in the play kitchen. They are happy to make beaded bracelets and create art with the art supplies. The shelf has created a new space for our science and exploration materials and they are now easily accessible to all. We will soon be teaching our 2nd and 3rd graders to use the weaving loom.\r\nThis week, after working very hard to study the book The Snowy Day, students had a whole snowy day activity day. We read the book, made fake snow, completed art projects and sequencing projects based on the book. And today, all of K-3 got to watch the animated version of the book on our brand new large inflatable screen. The projector and stand work perfectly and made a very realistic movie theater in one of our classrooms. The smell of popcorn drifted through the halls and students were so excited to feel like they were in a real theater. What a great way to finish a book study and start the week before our winter break.
