Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students always enjoy reading new and engaging texts and I am sure our new 7th graders will be no exception. Together with my partner teacher, Miss L, we teach Reading and Language Arts to about 100 inner city, 7th graders each school year. Our students come from many different backgrounds and come to our classes with varying reading levels and abilities. Our students spend a lot of time in the 7th grade learning about different reading strategies and how they can utilize the new strategies they learn independently.
Being in the inner city, we do not always have the opportunity to purchase new reading materials for our students.
So, our students are excited and appreciative anytime we can provide new texts that are the proper reading level and that they can relate to. Despite challenges, our students work hard everyday to become better readers, writers, and communicators.
My Project
The students on my 7th grade team participate in independent reading time during their Reading and Language Arts classes. During this time, students can practice the strategies they are learning in class. It also provides students the opportunity to choose a book that interests them and that they can easily relate to. It is a way to differentiate for readers at different levels.
Throughout my years as an educator, I have had the pleasure of watching students’ eyes light up when they see a new book on the shelf.
Unfortunately, we do not always have the ability to purchase the books we need.
My partner teacher Miss L and I, would love to be able to provide the students on our team with new reading material. We would appreciate it and we know our students will too!
