Our Long Awaited Return to Normalcy!

Help me give my students a warm welcome back to school with some much needed new toys such as Play Doh, a train set (something my students have always wanted), and manipulatives to facilitate small muscle control.

My Students

I currently teach pre-k in a title one school where nearly eighty percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. My classroom is comprised of three, four, and five year olds, many of whom are experiencing school for the very first time. My classroom is a blended unit meaning that some of the children have been identified with exceptionalities while others are typically developing three and four year olds. These students are a lovable, inquisitive bunch who enjoy coming to school.

The landscape of our classroom has been greatly altered due to COVID-19.

This pandemic has led to a challenging time for all and the reasoning behind shuttered schools and playgrounds is something many young children are unable to grasp.

My Project

No one expected the day before spring break to be the end of our pre-k world as we knew it. This was the last time that my students and I were together as a group, participating in our typical routine or circle time, small and large group activities, center rotations, and outdoor play. Since the pandemic hit, my families have been diligently working with their children on suggested daily activities, participating in interactive e-learning programs, and trying to maintain a brave face in front of their young children. This is a very uncertain time for all of us, and many young children are unable to express their feelings, thoughts, and fears surrounding the current state of affairs.

When I zoom chat with my students and ask what they miss most about school, "Playing with friends" is a common answer.

It is my dream to update the toys that we have in our classroom, creating an exciting new beginning for my pre-k students upon our return to the classroom.
