Our Learning Continues: We Cannot Be Stopped by Hurricane Maria

My students need an additional Lenovo Laptop so that all of my students can have one-on-one technology in the classroom. My classroom uses online curriculum for social studies.

My Students

Our school was impacted by Hurricane Maria and new students have been arriving from Puerto Rico due to the affects of the hurricane. These 6th grade students came into school after a long school closure with sad tales of the devastating effect of the storm.

Every one of these students learn in a different way, and each of them have different needs.

They may all be in the same classroom, but they are not the same. Multiple languages are spoken in their homes, and each home has its own struggles.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a Title I school, the type of school where students, parents, and teachers feel at home. We work really hard to make our school a community. Due to Hurricane Maria, we really need to make up for the lost classroom time.

My Project

This technology will help my students to be able to consistently engage in online, hands-on learning. My newer students that have had success in using online tools will be able to use Google Translate to help them with the curriculum. These kids are working hard to learn English. They will be able to use the laptop to access the learning materials that are a part of their online practice. This will allow them to take the sort of test that they will experience on the official test. Our district uses iStation, an adaptive learning program to assist students in areas of deficiency and allow them to progress if they are able to. Having a laptop available each day will help our students use the program designed to help students get Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) 2017-18 rehearsal along with standards-aligned rigorous skills practice.
