Thank you so much for reading my proposal! I am a first grade teacher at Forest Lane Academy. Forest Lane is a public elementary school in a pretty tough part of Dallas. More than 80% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and we have several Hurricane Rita evacuees. All of my students live in the apartments that border the busy street our school is located on and many of them have already witnessed hardships that most adults have not. Despite the neighborhood, my students are hard-working, dedicated, really great kids who want so much for themselves and their families. They love coming to school and learning new things. One of the content areas my students really enjoy is SCIENCE! Each spring, my school district sends the first grade students ladybugs, which they just adore! One big problem, though - all the ladybugs come in one cup with holes in the lid. My students have never been able to really enjoy watching them and observing them up close because one cup of ladybugs is hard to share with 21 other friends. With the supplies I'm requesting, each student in my class would have their own ladybug and a home to keep it in. Also, with the viewers, we can make better observations of the ladybugs. The viewers have a magnifying lens on the top so that we can REALLY get a good look at them. There is also a measuring device at the bottom of the viewer so we can measure and then compare the sizes of our various ladybugs. We will collect data and then put all the information into graphs about the different attributes of each ladybug - their size, color, how many spots, etc. We will also draw a diagram of our ladybugs and then label their various bodyparts. My students will make daily observations about their ladybugs and document their information in their science journals. They will then compare and contrast their information with their classmates. We will also read and write daily about our ladybugs. The viewers will also help teach my students about responsibility and safety with their individual ladybugs. And because the first grade studies ladybugs every school year, the supplies I'm requesting will be used for many, many years by many, many students. I am humbly requesting materials that will help my students get the true ladybug experience. All of the below items are available at Lake Shore Learning. - 2 (two) Jumbo Specimen Viewers - 1 (one) Observation and Discovery Set Thank you again for reading and considering my proposal. My children and I truly appreciate you!
