My students need a book display, a 4-tier shelf, two storage ottomans, two tabletop book racks, and two comfortable chairs to create an organized, inviting reading center that's full of tender loving care.

My ESL students are energetic young teens who come from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish and Chinese-speaking.
Each day they enter a tiresome battle to express themselves fully in a second language, and advance steadily towards that goal, leaving behind the initial stages of confusion and loneliness found when attending a large, urban middle school. Now they must persevere to express themselves with precision and successfully decode grade-level content alongside their peers, despite the comparatively limited resources they have to extend their English language and academic learning beyond school walls.
My Project
The generosity afforded by DonorsChoose has granted us a host of children's classics that are ready to capture the imaginations of my students. But now we need a place to put them!
My classroom needs an inviting reading area that can prominently display books available for children's perusal. Even when a variety of books is available, if they're not well-organized and cared for, they end up in dusty or crammed stack and piles that are unappealing to my easily distracted teens.
The bookshelves, racks, and reading chairs I hope to receive will be set up in order to encourage my students to spend their precious free time moments in school enjoying the adventure of a good book rather than their usual pre-teen shenanigans!
The ways my students can enrich our school community and learn from each other are limitless, as long as they have a safe space to grow their confidence in English.
