My students need books about nature. One of our units of inquiry is called Sharing the Planet. National Geographic books are great resources for students to use to independently research how animals depend on their habitats.
As an IB school, we strive to develop globally minded students who think critically about their world and beyond. The role of the teacher is vastly different than in other buildings as we facilitate learning through experiences and inquiry. This learning environment requires student access to multiple perspectives and our social-emotional curriculum is as important as our academic programming.
I am lucky to be apart of a community that aims to help students develop strategies for navigating our ever more diverse and global world.
We are a Title I school. The student population consists of 70% students of color, 64% of students receive free or reduced price lunch, and 40% are English Language Learners. Many of the students speak English as their second or third language.
My Project
Students will use National Geographic and Time books to independently research how habitats support animals basic needs. These little ones are required to read text at their level to find information necessary to make an animal report. Students will research an animal in their habitat and these books are going to help them be successful! This unit on Sharing the Planet helps students begin to understand the marvels of the natural world.
It is pertinent for our young people to learn to appreciate the world so that they will grow up to be adults who value our environment.
Through these books, students will learn how and why an animal is classified, how the habitat provides their food source, where they make their homes, and what their natural environment is like.
