My second grade students come from a variety of backgrounds and abilities! I love how kind and social each child is. At our school, we have focused on building a school-wide community to support our students' social-emotional needs. One way we have been doing this is by having a daily morning meeting that is solely focused on community building. We begin each morning by sitting in a circle on the carpet to learn how to talk to each other and really answer and respond to one another.
Our current carpet does not provide enough space for all 22 of my students to sit comfortably for our morning meeting or lessons. Having a student sitting off to the side or on the edge of the carpet is a recurring problem. It could be due to the student's size or the need to stretch his/her body. This is especially problematic when we're having our morning meeting. The goal of the morning meeting is to support an inclusive environment where the children practice listening and responding to the ideas/thoughts of their classmates. If one or two children are off the carpet, they're missing out on bonding with each other.
