Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is the largest Title One school in our district. We serve many families who are homeless, living in hotels, and in apartments. They do not have the same resources as many other families. 87% of our students received free/reduced meals. We also serve a large population of non-English or limited English speaking families. Our school is very transient. In addition to these demographics we have a rather large special education population. They come to our school to learn, but more importantly to be loved.

My Project

When you were in art class, don't you remember all of the coloring sheets, broken crayons, and dried up paints? Some of my students dread coming to art class for these very same reasons. Having limited funds to purchase materials that will be gone in a short period of time is what inspired me to create a project for reusable materials to use year after year in a way where the students can use their creativity to create masterpieces. The Brain Flakes building sets will be used for my students to work independently and in groups to engineer designs by combining architecture, engineering, technology, math, art, and fine motor skills. The clear boxes will be used to store our building sets. Having these materials at school will allow our students to access materials and learning toys that are not available at home.
