Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students come to their neighborhood school in Southeast DC every day with a smile on their face. Our school guides them through their learning and gives them 3 meals a day. We work hard, learn a lot, and always make sure to have fun during our 8 hours together.

For many of them, their day has only started when they go home to more hardships and responsibilities than any third grader should face.

Despite their personal struggles, my students show up every day and are excited to learn. At the end of every day, no matter how exhausting a day it was, I cannot help but sit back and admire the tenacity of each and every one of my wonderful students.

My Project

These materials will create a comfortable space for my students and ultimately help them develop their love for reading. Having pillows and comfortable seating in our class book nook will make the empty space much more welcoming and exciting for students.

Because my students often go home to harsh conditions, it is important for them to have a safe, inviting environment at school.

Having a comfortable book nook allows my students to get our of their desk chairs and learn in a different type of atmosphere, which is so important for their restless bodies and curious minds! Thank you for supporting our classroom!
