Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did your face light up when you noticed "Art" posted on the daily schedule? My students LOVE learning about art and becoming artists. Looking forward to art projects motivates them to come to school and learn more about other subject areas, too.

I teach about 70 5th and 6th grade students on a daily basis.

My students are hardworking leaders who enjoy school and look forward to success in high school, college, and beyond. They attend a community-based charter school in Southern California. My classes are made up of mostly African-American and Latino students. The students are being raised by single parents, grandparents, older siblings, and other family members like Aunts and Uncles. The families of my students struggle to make ends meet, but strongly support their child's education. My resilient students deserve engaging Art lessons.

My Project

Our school has no extra money for items beyond essential curriculum materials. That means teachers are on their own to fund "extras", such Art, PE, and Music. When students are involved in the arts, they make gains in reading, critical thinking, science, and problem solving. Just because there is no standardized testing for "Art", that does not mean that it is not important to student achievement. With these art supplies, like pastel chalk, watercolors, paint, and brushes, my students will engage in a hands-on Art unit which involves studying the greats, like Andy Warhol, Paul Klee, Rene Magritte, and Georgia O'Keeffe. In addition, they will explore art, science, and technology careers during STEM classes.

It's great for kids of all ages and grade levels to be able to display their artwork and show off their artistic skills.

Give my students a reason to run home and post their artwork on the fridge!
