Orwell or Junger: Which Way Will Society Go?

My students need "Tribe," by Sebastian Junger, to consider the question of whether a fractured society can be healed.

My Students

My kids are driven by social inequity and the need to reform the world around them. They've studied shaming; the education system and whether it needs reformed; critiqued media and advertising; and looked at how elements of the past (like Orwell's 1984) continue to influence the present.

Now we'd like to look how American veterans are or are not assimilating back into society.

Sebastian Junger has a fascinating perspective on what needs to be done and frames his perspective in a well written, rhetoric-conscious way.

My Project

We can no longer rely solely on the classics to teach us about the world. "1984" is great, but how do we change ourselves and others to keep the dystopia from becoming reality? Information comes too fast, changes like lightning and we need help keeping up with the significant issues of modern society. That's why we need to read "Tribe."

Sebastian Junger's book is a wonderful example of people who have one foot on society's sidewalk and one foot in the quicksand of the marginalized.

As the upcoming movers, shakers, and leaders of society, we need to think about how to react to the questions of social equity and reform.
