I teach Science and Math at North Star Academy in Redwood City, CA. North Star Academy is a public magnet school for gifted children. One of the most successful programs at North Star Academy is our Enrichment Program. All students choose an Enrichment class which they attend daily, 5 days a week. These enrichment classes are similar to electives and offer students a wide variety of exposure in areas they normally wouldn't get. In the past, I've taught Current Events Debate, Word Games, and Multimedia. This coming trimester, I'd like to teach the students Origami. Origami will be hugely popular and it's a great way to sneak math, geometry, and algebra in while students are actively making figures and having fun. My plan is to introduce a basic folding technique each day. Then, I will have students plan, design, and fold an origami project (i.e., mobile or framed figure) for presentation at the end of the course. During the course, students will maintain a notebook of figures, instructions, and math calculations on their figures (relationships, areas, perimeters, etc.) Students (30) will each need a basic origami book, and plenty of origami paper. Also, to assist teaching, I would like to get an Origami video lesson. Origami math is an excellent way to combine all learning modalities and both right and left brain strengths.
