Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 23 fantastic fourth graders in an inclusion classroom at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Our school is truly a barrier free school, serving all students who come through our doors. Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work.

Students are excited and proud to walk into a classroom that is organized and promotes independence.

Whether its browsing through the classroom library, getting rubrics and checklists from the writing center, or retrieving materials from the math center, students take pride in their environment and themselves when they can navigate a well organized classroom.

My Project

In an organized communal learning space, organizational tools like storage bins and labels can keep libraries organized for students with varying interests in genres and topics. Wall files and organization drawers allow students to retrieve materials independently from different learning centers that are needed for learning. In a personal learning space, an item like heavy duty baggies allow students to transport borrowed books to and from school in a safe and organized way.

Whether it's a communal learning space or a personal learning space, learning spaces that are organized promote learning and fosters independence for students!

Students are more likely to pick books from a classroom library where the bins are uniform and clearly labeled. Students like to be self sufficient in getting their own materials from wall files or an organized center, without the permission or help from their teachers.

No matter if it's to the benefit of the entire class or a specific student, these organizational tools will help keep students organized and ready for learning while fostering independence.
