Organizing Our Independent Tasks: Special Needs Classroom

My students need materials that will help them to keep their independent work tasks and supplies close by so that they do not have to transition to around the room during independent work times.

My Students

I teach 10 students, ranging from grades K-5 with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. My students have difficulty with organization and transition. We work with each student individually on work that is tailored to their level.

It has been difficult at times to transition from their work areas to gather supplies from independent work boxes and back to their area.

My students do better sitting at tables in groups, therefore they do not have desks to place items in.

We would love to have some items that will help our students to have their work tasks and supplies close to their area, so that they may be more productive in working on their independent tasks with less disruptions!

My Project

These materials will be used in order to minimize the disruption of transitioning to other areas in the room to pick up independent work tasks, as well as allowing the students to keep their own materials.

For my special needs students, it is hard to stay focused when they are transitioning from one area to another in order to get their work items and then back to their desk.

Often, this makes it hard for them to refocus on their work.

These seat pockets and book bins will allow them to have all of their work tasks at their seat. It will also mean that they can keep their own supplies such as crayons and scissors at their seats, without myself or my assistant having to stop instruction with other studnets in order to hand out "classroom" supplies.
