Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

School begins at 8:20 with eating breakfast in the classroom and a daily check-in for how they are feeling. Our day is filled with math challenges that force out of the box thinking, along with collaborative problem solving, and the engineering design process.

A lot of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and many attend a Title I school.

About 70% of my students are first generation Americans and they learn about the power of education and hard work. Of my 25+ students, a small fraction have college educated parents, and the idea and prospect of a higher educated life is a distant reality.

My students love working with technology, and so I'm constantly introducing them to subjects and topics that will strengthen their STEM understanding. Along with technology I focus heavily on creative problem solving and drive their questioning abilities.

My Project

Students in grades 3rd through 6th are able to participate in a robotics club afterschool. We use the LEGO EV3 and SPIKE PRIME robots to grow our thinking and discovery of world problems and issues. Each December a group of students travel to a local college or university to compete in the First LEGO League tournament, and so having a well designed robotics room is critical to our success.

Students are encouraged to design and build improvements for their robot, so an organizational rack will help with clearing up some clutter in our robotics room.

After school when students arrive, they will meet with their partner to discuss what the weekly challenge will be and how they can solve it. Students can see different LEGO pieces and sensors in the organizational trays and they can pull these parts and see if their ideas will work out, or need some revisions.
