My Students

I teach kindergarten in an urban, Midwestern school district. There are about 400 students in my elementary school, and 67% of those students are described as low-income, based on the Illinois School Report Card.

My kindergartners are an extremely diverse group of kids, coming from various backgrounds and walks of life, but all of whom are unique, amazing, and extremely special to me.

I teach in a regular education kindergarten classroom, but have a large variety of learning levels, including students with special education needs within my classroom.

My Project

My classroom library is currently difficult for students to successfully use. The shelving units and book bins are very old and do not match at all. Many of the book bins are falling apart. Due to this, it is hard for my students to remove the bins from the shelves to look for books to read without the book bins breaking even more.

Our classroom library will be utilized more effectively if we have working shelving units and book bins.

Students in my room visit the classroom library every day, and for them to have a visually appealing and organized space to read would help them to be more engaged and successful readers.
