My students are full of energy! Full of energy for their writing and enthusiasm for their reading. Each day these hard working fifth graders are creatively crafting essays and stories. Each day they think deeply about what they read and share that thinking with others.
Our school is a grade 4 and grade 5 elementary school serving a small suburban town.
Many of my students are into team sports like soccer and football, while others take dance and love art. I teach Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, and Word Study to two groups of about 21 students. It's wonderful to be a part of a team, working with an excellent partner teacher who teaches Math, Science, and Social Studies. Despite our community's supportive nature, all our needs cannot be met. Thank goodness for Donor's Choose!
My Project
My students are always working and learning. There is not a minute that is wasted during the day. Students spend upwards of 90 minutes actively reading both independently and in groups, and writing both in their Writer's Notebooks and on the computer. All of this learning results in lots of evidence that needs to be collected and sent home to appreciative grown-ups who are anxiously awaiting examples of their child's work. It's too disruptive to the learning to pass back papers one by one onto students' desks. I'd like to have a "mail slot" for each student so that the "delivery person" can sort the mail in a way that doesn't disrupt the learning in the room. One of the difficulties we face is not having a location for this "mail". We need vertical file sorters so that the work can be sorted while taking up the least amount of space. I have a shelf in the closet where students get their materials right before leaving for the day which would be perfect.

They like this. I know it might sound crazy, but my students really enjoy writing and reading, and they want to spend as much time doing it as they can! Help us to keep on learning!
