Organize Our Math Classrooms to Help the Students Learn

My Students

I teach math in a 9-12 high school in rural Northern MN. We are 84% white, 5.8% Hispanic or Latino, 3.8% American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.5% Asian, 1.3% Black or African-American, and 4.6% of two or more races. In addition our student body consists of 3% English learners, 19% Special education, 41.5% Free/Reduced-Price meals, and 0.3% homeless. Because many of these students have struggled with math in the past, I work hard to make the material engaging, fun, and accessible. I am frequently adapting materials, developing projects, and using games and activities to make the math curriculum meaningful to even the most math-resistant students.

I am always working on providing students the tools that they need to graduate high school, and ensuring that they have the skills to be successful after high school as well.

I work to set-up a comfortable classroom environment, where students feel safe to struggle and grow.

My Project

Our high school math department has been implementing a new curriculum which is designed to engage learners in a deeper and more robust understanding of the material. This curriculum uses many project-based learning activities, and integrates mathematics learning into the larger 21st-century STEM curriculum. Because it is a project-based curriculum, there are many handouts and resources that are printed from online, which need to be sorted, organized, and distributed among the various teachers in our department, who frequently rotate courses and units collaboratively.

These organizational materials will allow a more streamlined and efficient delivery of the curriculum and facilitate strong student learning and understanding.

Our school has a high population of students with Special Needs, including ADHD, LD, and ASD, and many of these student receive mainstreamed instruction in our math classes. Having a more organized and efficient delivery system for this new curriculum will help all of our students to be successful.
