My Students

Imagine walking into a high school and having to learn the academic content in a different language. I am a high school teacher in South Georgia. My students are English learners from seven different countries. This year, my colleague, Mr. Patterson, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher, and I have the opportunity to work together as co-teachers in a ninth grade literature class. Because our students have so many similarities and needs, we bring our individual teaching gifts to the table to meet the needs of "our" at-risk students. For most of our students, they are literally learning something new every day they enter our classroom. Our students are sweet and humble. They come to class daily with a smile on their faces and a desire to learn. They are kind to each other. Although our students read below grade level and have vocabulary deficits, they help their classmates. As educators, we know that teaching organizational skills will benefit our students. Yet, our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and need access to folders and colored writing utensils with no financial constraints.

My Project

"For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned." This quote is from an anonymous individual, but it is so true. Our students need assistance with organization. We teach this skill in our class. It is a skill that they can use for a lifetime.

We are in need of organizational supplies to help our students be academically successful in a Ninth Grade Literature Class.

We need vinyl 3-prong pocket folders for each of our students for each of the four units that will be covered this semester. We also need colored highlighters, colored pens, and colored pencils to teach our students how to color code to enhance their study skills.

By having these materials readily available to our students, they will be on the road to academic success!
