How many people from South Georgia have been North of the Arctic Circle? Well, Cathy Parker who graduated from Lowndes High School in 1983, has written a book, Northern Lights, which is about her calling to provide a football field to a community in Barrow, Alaska, and her adventures visiting the most northern American city. What better way to learn than from a primary source who can take us straight to Alaska through her story! Our goal is to purchase one of her books for each student to read and to keep in his or her personal library. Our students have many obstacles to overcome. They can learn from the book, Northern Lights, which will be used as part of our ninth grade literature unit on nonfiction. Each student will receive a personal copy of the book Northern Lights. Vocabulary and reading comprehension will be emphasized. As students’ reading improves, we know that their writing will improve. Good readers make good writers. According to Mike Hanski, “Everything you learn as a reader, you can use as a writer afterward. It is difficult and mostly impossible to write something really good if you did not experience anything good that had been written already.” The students will certainly experience reading a great nonfiction book, and as an enrichment activity, Mrs. Parker will be invited to our class to speak about her adventure and encourage our students to find their callings and pursue them.
