Organizational Tools are Important for Efficient Mathematicians

Help me give my students durable binders and pocket dividers for students to create a year-long math resource of important concepts. The dry erase boards, highlighters and pens are also important tools for color-coding and clarifying concepts.

My Students

Fourth grade is one of my favorite grades to teach. My students are amazing, diverse and multi-dimensional. The academic range is wide from striving readers, writers, and mathematicians, to students who perform above and beyond 4th grade level. Our school has English Language learners from all over the world: Guatemala, Mexico, Yemen, Pakistan, and China, to name a few countries. My school not only has cultural and socio-economic diversity, but we also serve students with many different learning styles.

Full of endless potential, my students will flourish in a classroom environment which supports how each individual learns best and gives them tools designed for active learning.

By the fourth grade, many students have already developed "math identities." It is important to foster the students who have positive identities and imperative to actively work with students who have formed negative ones (i.e. "I'm not good at math." or "Math is not for me.") This is crucial. When students take an active role in their learning, experience success, and understand that math is "all about your picture," positive attitudes will prevail.

My Project

Fourth graders are expected to know and to learn a lot of math. They are expected to be facile with multiplication tables, advanced place value, the four operations, and have an understanding of fractions and decimals for example. If you are a striving student, the content can be daunting.

Too often there seems to be an emphasis on "rigor" and less emphasis on that math is "all about one's picture." Math is not meant to be "hard," but rather math is about using "the best tool in the toolkit." My project is simple, but powerful.

Making a year-long mathematics resource binder will be an important tool for my students. Learning how to organize information into a usable resource is a very important skill. Having a resource that is thoughtfully color-coded and relevant will be a powerful learning tool. The individual whiteboards will also motivate students to participate and take risks. They allow you to revise answers easily. This is a positive practice.

Students will be able to reference current and past topics with their math resource binder. They can take it home to show their families what they are learning. They can use it to clarify their thinking or to teach others. Since the students are the authors, they will also be the owners of what they have learned.
