This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am incredibly fortunate to be the teacher of bright, outgoing, motivated first graders at a Title I school in Los Angeles. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students come from mostly low-income homes, and many have been faced with challenges no child should experience. And yet, they come to school with a big smile every morning, ready to learn something new!
Students flourish in the calm of an organized classroom.
When my students are able to get materials they need easily, they are able to focus on the task at hand instead of wasting time looking for what they need. As a teacher, I do not want to use valuable instructional or planning time trying to find the materials I need to teach.
The Iris latch lid storage boxes will be used to store month-specific teaching materials. The Sterilite storage boxes will be used to properly store math manipulatives such as cubes, counters, geometric shapes, flashcards, clocks, etc. so students have easy access to them. The Iris desktop drawer storage will be used to maintain level-specific materials for small group instruction.
Due to budget constraints, teachers are given a limited amount of copy paper during the school year. First graders tend to use a lot of paper due to frequent practice of basic skills such as penmanship and cutting as well as using it for enrichment activities. The box of copy paper will ensure that students have sufficient materials for such practice and minimize the out-of-pocket expense.
