Help me give my students tri-fold boards to display their research, a portable hard drive for storing all media, a paper cutter and card stock for creating text features/sections, and double-sided tape.
Our students come from a once thriving coal-mining community that has been devastated by the loss of income and industry. With over 82% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, these children are in great need of a high-quality education. Education and shared resources will be their ticket out of poverty.
Because we are from a high-poverty area, most of my students do not have access to basic school supplies at home and depend upon their teachers to provide everything they need at school.
This project will help my students to have what they need for completing assignments, projects and class presentations.
Our school is located in one of the most beautiful regions of the United States. Our school has struggled with nearly-crippling budget cuts and teacher shortages, and this fact leaves us with difficult choices to make when deciding how to spend money.
My Project
“The dream begins, most of the time, with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you on to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called 'truth.'” -Dan Rather
My students are going to learn the five core principles of journalism by researching opposing viewpoints, gathering research and presenting the facts.
They will learn about truth and accuracy, independence, fairness and impartiality, humanity and accountability.
Students will learn the importance of every person having a voice. Everyone has an opinion, but many times they believe that is the only opinion. I want my students to learn to respect everyone. Whether they agree or not with the stand others take on controversial issues, it is important to present the facts and cover all angles of the issue. They will learn the true definition of "impartial and ethical."
In groups of five, students will be assigned controversial topics to research and report. They will not take a stand on one side or the other of the issue. Personal opinions will be kept to themselves. They will only REPORT THE FACTS. The students will be required to carefully screen sources for validity and authenticity.
All display boards will be placed in the school library for all student body members to view.
