We are a first-grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 22 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
“A place for everything, and everything in its place.” How many times have we heard that growing up? Organization is an essential skill for students to learn, as it teaches and promotes responsibility and executive functioning. That is why we are requesting a number of items, such as crayons and scissors, for each individual student. These supplies will be given to each student to maintain and utilize for the duration of the year. It will also alleviate the need for students to get up from their seats and locate items around the classroom. The plastic 3-drawer storage will be used to organize the phonics curriculum materials. Students will be able to easily access materials needed for phonics when it is time.
A clean, organized classroom helps students achieve success.
Supplies such as bulletin board paper and borders draw students’ eyes to visual references around the classroom. It’s important that the classroom is appealing to the students so their attention is sustained, especially for special education students.
