Operation Musical Memories

Help me give my students the opportunity to "pay it forward" to residents of a local memory care facility! We are doing a musical memory project, based on the documentary "Alive Inside"--which proves that music triggers memories.

My Students

This project is one that I have been waiting to do. . . Waiting for the right group of students to take it on.

Meeting with and doing a service project for memory care patients can be a real stretch for some young people, but these kids are up to the challenge.

They have even "tweaked" the project some from the original vision from "Alive Inside"--and I am confident it will be better.

This shared memory work will culminate in the seniors doing their own "memory books" before graduation. What a fitting end to a memory-filled service project.

My Project

My senior English class has surveyed residents at a local memory care facility to learn the music that they listened to "back in the day."

By creating individualized CDs filled with that music, and providing residents with CD players and headphones, we hope to tap into the lasting memories that music provides.

Based on the documentary, "Alive Inside," this project will apply the proven concept that remembered music sparks activity and interest from memory care residents. My students are in the process of putting together "play lists" for each resident, with the next step being burning a CD for each person to play on a CD player--with headphone listening as an option!
