Opera for Kids

My students need books such a "A Soup Opera" to use for a drama/music unit and some costumes to help present an age-appropriate opera as a class.

My Students

Opera may seem "out there" to many of us, but if presented in a fun way, children can learn so much about drama and music from staging their own opera!

My students are from a very low-income, rural community.

Most of them don't have access to theater or musical productions unless they are presented in school. We do have a summer event in our community where an adult opera is staged by professionals. My students could feel connected to this event if we were able to show them what an opera actually entails - but make it an opera appropriate for their age level.

My Project

I would like to add Jim Gill's story: "A Soup Opera" to my teaching library, as well as adding two copies to our student library for children to check-out. I would also like to add two other opera related stories (featuring an opera singing cat) to our school libraries. A chef costume would also be purchased in order to help us stage "A Soup Opera" ourselves.

Music and drama are so essential to my students' growth.

With today's emphasis on computers and video games, children do not get the opportunity to express themselves and to be creative. I would like to use this opera lesson to help my students use their creativity!
