Opening Worlds: Giving Students Access to Science Beyond Reality

Help me give my students an innovative learning environment that brings science to life. By integrating VR technology into our classroom, students will be able to explore, question, and interact with scientific concepts that deepen their understanding

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 5th grade science students are curious, capable learners who thrive when given opportunities to explore and make sense of the world around them. They are eager to ask questions, investigate real-world problems, and engage in meaningful scientific thinking. However, their access to authentic, real-world scientific experiences is often limited by time, resources, and logistical constraints. Without these opportunities, students miss out on deeper connections that make learning both memorable and impactful. This project addresses that need by bringing immersive, real-world exploration directly into the classroom.

This project will provide students with access to two Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, allowing them to explore environments and phenomena that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The materials requested will be used regularly in small groups and whole-class settings to support interactive lessons and learning stations. Students will rotate through VR experiences that align with curriculum standards, allowing for repeated exposure and deeper understanding. These tools will be intentionally integrated into lessons to enhance (not replace) traditional instruction, ensuring that all students can actively participate and benefit.

Through VR, students will be able to dive into ecosystems, examine the different forms of energy, explore outer space, and observe natural phenomena up close. These experiences will not be passive; students will actively engage in inquiry-based learning by asking questions, making observations, and constructing explanations using evidence gathered during their virtual explorations. VR will serve as a powerful tool to support hands-on investigations, collaborative discussions, and critical thinking.
