Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work as the Ecology/Science coordinator at an inner city school. We struggle with funding opportunities for students to experience science in a meaningful way through field trips or lab equipment. In years past I have found that the Sally Ride Festival is a great way to open up that world. The Sally Ride Festival is a festival organized by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. This festival offers hands-on workshops in a variety of science disciplines for girls in grades 5 through 8. Since those years are the years when girls begin to be less interested in academics in general, this festival is a great way to spark their interest. The girls will receive free science materials from the workshops they choose and they will get to see astronaut Tammy Jernigan make a speech. The festival takes place on the campus of Cal Tech University which is one more great reason for taking students from this neighborhood. It is our goal at Camino Nuevo to prepare students for college and get them to think in a college bound way. The experience of being on a campus such as Cal Tech and sitting in a classroom there is priceless for students who may not even know anybody who ever went to college. This year I hope to take a much larger group of students to take part in this experience. The only thing standing in our way is registration fee which prevents many of my students from participating in events such as this.
