Opening the World for Rising Readers

My Students

My students are bright and enthusiastic kindergarten through 2nd graders who need a little extra help in reading. They come to me eager to learn and engage with books.

The students I teach come from different backgrounds, have different interests and have varied life experiences, but they all love books.

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student connect to and get excited about a book. The right book can make a student beam with pride and a sense of accomplishment. I strive to give my students that feeling every day.

My Project

Imagine being a struggling reader eager to learn about space or redwood trees or tropical fish, but the book has only black and white photographs. As a Literacy Intervention Teacher, I strive to engage my students daily with books that introduce them to a world of topics. Many of my students have limited life experiences, and are eager to learn about our world. However, the books we have available do not have features that help with comprehension.

Students need books that have high quality text and pictures for engagement and understanding.

I am seeking quality nonfiction leveled readers for my students.

When students come to me for reading assistance, I want to be able to hand them a book that brings a gleam to their eyes and a smile to their face. This project will help me excite struggling readers.
