Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help me make my advanced classroom...ADVANCED! Unfortunately I find that public education, religiously under-funded, overlooks the needs of advanced level learners. These are the future leaders of our world and it is imperative that we foster their critical thinking and analytical skills. Because so many students in our population are performing on a remedial level, the majority of our funding is dedicated to meeting the needs of the bottom, rather than fostering the skills of the top. With 75% of my school qualifying for free and reduced lunch, it is not surprising that so few of them have access to classic literature.

Coming from an urban setting, I find that the only exposure many of my students have to novels is at school. Sadly, I don't have enough higher level novels to meet the demands of advanced level students. I believe that the use of Orwell's novels can help catapult these students towards becoming AP contenders once they move on to high school.

A firm believer in teaching more with less, I would like to conduct an author study. Students will be able to compare and contrast themes, review Orwell's development of characters, and dissect the methods and literary elements Orwell uses in his novels. George Orwell is an excellent author to teach students classic literary elements and critical thinking skills. I need class sets of both "Animal Farm" and "1984" along with teacher's manuals to accomplish this goal.

I am so thankful that there are people such as yourselves in this world. As an educator, I see just how critical it is becoming that we foster and develop the minds of our advanced learners. My students will be extremely grateful and ecstatic to find out that they matter to someone; that they count despite their socio-economic disadvantages. I so often hear students talk about how our school is 'poor', and it saddens me that they are helplessly aware of even their academic poverty. I can already see their smiles and hear their excitement should these materials magically materialize. Thank you for making a difference in students' lives...whether you choose this project or one of the many other deserving proposals. Your donation will surely make a tremendous impact.
