Nonfiction literature is essential to a child's reading diet. Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them and are captivated at nature's wonders. Providing nonfiction magazines like Ranger Rick and Zoobooks taps into the enthusiasm of nonfiction reading and writing.
The children in the reading recovery program are from a lower poverty neighborhood of our city and are struggling to keep up with their classmates.
Through the reading recovery program we are encouraging the children to read and through this project we are especially encouraging them to read nonfiction which motivates children to engage in nonfiction research/writing around a topic of high interest. They have many questions that motivate them to find the answers to their questions. The excitement is infectious and remains with them long after a unit of study is completed. Magazines like Ranger Rick and Zoobooks are similar to National Geographic magazines but for children. If you have ever picked up a National Geographic magazine its attractive photographs grip you, stirs up curiosity and transports you to another part of the world. The benefits of nonfiction reading and writing helps students to evaluate, critique what they read and enjoy the wonderment of discovery.
My Project
My students will need a library of Ranger Rick and Zoobooks, each of which highlights a particular animal. These magazines/books can be used in a highly effective way during Writer's Workshop. Reluctant students will have access to a wide range of animals to choose from to match their interest. Donations to this project will enable my students to develop a love for nonfiction and to provide an opportunity for them to read, research and write about animals that they are curious about.
My goal is to promote research and writing skills simultaneously.
I would like reluctant readers and writers to be fully engaged in topics that they are truly enthusiastic about and to become strong life long learners. Students will use these magazines in Writer's Workshop or as a reference tool to practice and master reading, writing and research skills.
