I am an ESL Coordinator in a New York City public school trained in Reading Recovery. I service English Language Learners grades K-8. The students that I serve are the lowest 20% in my school when it comes to literacy (reading and writing). The school population consists of low-income families from a neighborhood shelter as well as recent immigrants. My students come from homes where English is not the primary language. These young learners are at-risk because they are well below their peers in reading. These students require extra support in reading. I want to help my students discover the joy of reading as well as acquire the use of English language correctly. My students are eager learners but cannot yet read by themselves.
