I teach in a Title 1 school, in San Jose, California. My classroom is filled with a diverse group of English Language learners. Most students that attend, are faced with challenges inside and outside of the classroom, and yet come to school everyday with a smile and great attitude. 76% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My first graders are eager, independent learners, striving to do their best everyday.
I strive to provide multiple oportunities for the students to have choice and excel within their interests and what motivates them. I am so very proud to be a part of this hardworking group of students who teach me just as much as I teach them.
My Project
These tools will provide Flexible seating, allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During Guided Reading time, I am able to work with students individually and in small groups at their instructional reading levels. While students independently work, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating and keeping them engaged. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The headsets and ipad charging station will make my listening center run more smoothly. The headsets especially will allow my English Language Learners to listen to stories through the iPad programs. This also helps keep the noise level in my room down, and keep other readers from being distracted.
