This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Music at a Title I school in Baltimore. My students get very excited for their music classes, where they get to sing, move, create body percussion and explore musical instruments. The delight in their eyes from hearing sounds they can create with authentic musical instruments is invaluable. One of the most magical experiences for them is hearing harmony ring out--simply by each child playing their given note at the same time. After that wonderful success, children are hooked on music learning.

My students have had to adjust to virtual learning for the past six months of their education, and one thing they have expressed is how much they wish they could learn to play an instrument!

My Project

The recorder is usually introduced in third grade—but our students are not learning in person right now. However, if our students were learning in the school building, they would not be able to work with an instrument that sounds by blowing air! During this topsy-turvy time, we have a unique opportunity to provide music learning from home that students could not currently do in school: learn to play a woodwind!

This project will provide every third and fourth grade child in our school with their own recorder--they will be learning to read music and play an instrument, then engaging in their virtual music class as they share their progress with one another.

Students will be able to engage in hands-on learning with their own recorder. Learning to read music. Learning to imagine a sound and then persevere to make the sound they envision. I will have a durable instrument for leading them. Our children will be developing a craft they can have their whole lives. They will be developing a wordless way to express…and a valuable way to connect.
