My music classroom is a place where students actively make music—not just reproduce what they’re shown. Each week, they sing, move, improvise, and play instruments, learning to listen closely, take risks, and refine their work. I use an Orff Schulwerk approach, where students learn through singing, movement, and hands-on playing. They learn and perform folk songs, dances, and repertoire from European and American traditions—including Appalachian folk songs, African American children’s games, and styles such as blues, gospel, and jazz—as well as music from cultures around the world. Students create, add accompaniments, and improvise, choosing what to play and how it fits with the group. Many of my students only have access to instruments at school. While we have a range, there aren’t enough for every child to fully participate. Expanding our collection will allow students to play together and stay actively engaged.
