I get to teach some great kids!! High school freshmen are an adventure. They come into high school not knowing what is expected or required of them even if they think that they do know. They come into high school needing to develop skills that will make them successful in high school and will allow themselves to get prepared for college. The freshman that I have the privilege of working with are students that have gotten behind in school but have decided to really apply themselves, get back on track, graduate from high school on time by completing two grades in one year in our LEAP program, and then get into college. It is an exciting and a challenging time for everyone involved.
These kids are ones who have struggled in school and usually in other areas of their lives as well. Some have come close to giving up on school, some have low self-esteem, others come from low income families or dysfunctional families, and most have some combination of these disadvantages. Still, they are kids who want to do well in life. When you get to know these kids you know that this is true.
Something that plays an important role in helping these students is to provide educational opportunities that ensure success and then build to larger steps. Books and reading are paramount to this. This grant will provide several copies and different works of high interest classic literature ( such as "White Fang" and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court")for students to become engrossed in reading. It is amazing to give a student a book and see the excitement. Your heart wants to melt within your chest when they say things like, "Wow, no one has ever given me a book before."
You can know that these special kids have another chance to be successful and encouraged in school. You can know that these kids will be touched by the fact that someone cared enough to provide new books for them. Thank you.
