Our little learners are wonderful writers. Part of our thematic unit is to format letters, write and respond to others. Students will read and listen to "We're All Wonders" by RJ Palacio. They will write a letter to Auggie (the character) to befriend and encourage him. As a class, we will complete a chart to give examples of what compassion looks like at school, at home, and in the community. They will also use the materials provided to send encouraging messages to peers, neighbors, and family members to uplift them! In addition, playing games with others will also help build compassion towards others. They get opportunities to be intuitive, strategic, and collaborative.
My goal for this project is to teach my students that they can be compassionate by uplifting and building relationships in their communities.
They can do this by using words of encouragement or just spending time and/or working with others. I believe my little learners will be blessed by doing these acts of kindness and will begin to understand how deepening relationships can grow compassion in their little hearts.
My students are special because they are already empathetic and loving. They want to express themselves and they want to have multiple ways to do that. I will be able to measure my students success through the way the communicate and treat others.
