Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teenagers are pulled in so many directions, that sometimes reading for pleasure falls by the wayside. 40% of adults in the US did not read any books in 2025. We want to change that trend by challenging our students to be active readers.

At PC West, we have started using Beanstack, a reading program than incentivizes reading by tracking points and rewarding students with badges.

Once students reach certain checkpoints, they can choose from various items. We want the items to be appealing enough to encourage our students to keep going. We have chosen nice journals, hair accessories that are on trend, fidget games, pins for backpacks and lanyards, keychains, and other items asked for by teens that are meant to encourage them to keep going and to help motivate them to challenge themselves more.

We started this program last year and we had a 52% participation rate. Out of those students, 46% completed the challenge. 14% went above and beyond, earning a graduation cord, showing our community the value of reading.

Our goal is to double those numbers and continue to watch our students become readers, which we know creates learners and leaders.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
