Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Walking into the doors of my fifth grade classroom is a sense of reality and empowerment for my 10 year olds. My students are aware that this is their last year of elementary and they embrace that responsibility throughout the entire year. They know that they are to set the example and expectations for the grade levels below them.
My students are a small part of our large school population.
They come from many different backgrounds and the competition to be a top student is immense. However, their motivation is to be just that; the top students! Despite their struggles, they want to succeed, they want to be the best and they have a teacher who motivates them daily to be amazing individuals.
Half of my students live with anyone else but their parents, some live in single parent households, and for many English isn't their first language. However, I always tell them that we leave our struggles and our problems at the door and we enter with a fresh mindset, ready to learn, ready to capture something new, ready to become those amazing individuals that I know they are capable of being.
My Project
Everyone knows that food and refreshments are something that attract people to places or activities. The mini fridge will be my chip to motivate students to read and discuss what they are learning while enjoying a cold refreshment or snack. The bean bag chairs and the rug will create a safe and comfortable environment for my students where they will be able to have book talks and share how they relate to their lives. It will also be their place to read independently, finish their work or work collaboratively with others.
This donation will create a cozy atmosphere that many of them may not have at home.
The rug will be located in the corner of our room and every morning it will be used as a gathering place to share about the books they are reading, current events, or life topics. The mini fridge will be filled with snacks that they bring or that I can purchase and they will enjoy them while sharing what they've learned or how these books relate to them.
This donation will help create a safe zone, an area they know belongs to them and a place they will enjoying coming to everyday.
